Every summer, organisations around the world send us their best journalists to participate in the Thomson Foundation summer course.
Based at our London headquarters, the five-week programme is an intensive practical training programme which not only focuses on developing the all-round digital and multimedia abilities of the participants, but also the ability of the participants to train their peers.
Bringing new skills to your organisation From setting up a mobile journalism-based digital online operation for a newspaper group to simply training the newsroom, our alumni and their editors have ensured that they have benefitted from their staffs participation in the course.
Participants train with award-winning journalists and expert practitioners from the UK and are offered the opportunity to explore their own case studies and their own organisations ambitions. In some cases, they may even work on content that will be published back in their home countries.
Innovation and imagination Innovation and imagination are at the heart of the Thomson Foundation summer course with content being refreshed and updated each year to include the latest digital techniques, such as immersive storytelling or podcasting, mobile journalism and social media skills. Such elements have become an essential part of every course, but essential, too, is the fundamental storytelling principles that underpin all quality journalism.
The mobile journalism and social media skills have helped changed the way I approach my job.
Monique Mortlock, summer course 2018 Skills-intensive training and access to UK media The course is a mixture of masterclasses, workshops and practical training and includes visits to some of the UK's leading media organisations.
It is aimed at experienced journalists who want to advance their own and their organisations digital skills and grow their ability to think in different media.
On the fifth week, participants get the opportunity to spend time at leading media organisations, such as The Guardian or ITN.
Send us your brightest talent Our summer course is also seen as a great prize. The experience is used to reward winners like the Vodacom Journalist of the Year or to develop talented staff destined for greater responsibility in the organisation.
If you would like to sponsor a member of your team, please get in touch with us by email. Fees to participate are £4,800 plus travel and accommodation expenses.
