Increasing number of teenagers reading books at libraries in Ningbo

1.2 million readers borrowed 2.72 million books, 1.32 million readers borrowed 3.31 million books, and 1.36 million readers borrowed 3.42 million books from the Ningbo Library, respectively, from 2012 to 2014, according to data released by the library.

The data shows that the borrowing rate of adults increased by 7-10% per year in the past 5 years, while the rate of increase of children's books being borrowed has reached 15% per year. Yong readers have become the major source of book borrowers in the library, and they tend to check out most genres of books except for books about health and healthcare.

The stronger reading ability of young people through more advanced education is the major reason of the increasing reading rate, according to Xu Yibo, president of the Ningbo Library.

Of all the books checked out at the libraries, <>, <> and <> topped the most read classic literature among readers in 2014. Practical books, such as tourism books and stock-investing books, have been getting more and more popular in recent years.

The Ningbo Library also launched a personalized service to meet the demands of readers by purchasing books that citizens specially request, a service which has received great welcome in recent years.

Ningbo topped the Most Literate Cities' list issued by Amazon.com in 2014 and ranked among the top 10 cities with the highest reading indexes in 2014 in a list issued by the China Publishing Institute. Ningbo ranked second among the cities purchasing the most books in the past 5 years in a list issued by Dangdang.com.
