It may be the early breakthrough that secures justice for Kulani Mathebula and his family. The 19-year-old was stabbed on his way to Mondeor High School on Wednesday and suffered three knife-wounds to the chest.
Friends and paramedics rushed to help the Grade 11 student, but nothing could be done to save him. He was declared dead at the scene when paramedics arrived at 8:15. Despite the tragic circumstances, there is at least hope that justice will be swift in this case.
Mondeor stabbing: Video evidence identifies suspects Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi rushed to Mondeor High shortly after receiving the news. He's been in consultation with the school, the local police and family members. Harrowingly, his mother is reported to have seen her son's body as she arrived outside the school gates, sharing her anguish with the local community.
Lesufi concluded that there is video evidence of the crime, which has been submitted to the police. It has emerged that there are three other learners on the recording, all of whom are suspected of being involved in the murder.
I can confirm, from the footage we have, the police will be in a position to identify those people. We have already zeroed in on three other learners from different schools in the area.
We are not yet sure if they committed the crime, but if it is them, it will be even sadder. We can't have students committing these horrendous deeds. The police will be assisting us on these issues, as we address what is necessary.

Lesufi addressed learners at Mondeor High to confirm the news that Mathebula had lost his life. He was described as a boy with a bright future, and his death has left the community in southern Johannesburg reeling.
