September 8, 2015 SOUP AND PAUSE FEST: PURITY
Next up in our Pause Fest series is Juan Manuel Cod , art director of Soup, a motion graphic studio from Buenos Aires, Argentina. This past year at Pause Fest, we had the chance to meet and work with a number of wickly talented people, who interpreted the Pause Fest theme of PURE in motion response videos. Juan tells us a bit about his project, PURITY, and his experiences with Pause Fest.
1. What was your inspiration behind your video?
We developed our version of what was for us the meaning of the word PURITY and all the images and definitions that it connotes. With all this brainstorming, we developed a short story that provided the main guide for the animation:
The human race has never experienced or known a state of purity. It has never been free from rules, imperfections, restrictions or moral statements. Always contaminated by societys pettiness, corrupted by the use and abuse of power of human beings over each other and nature itself. The miseries, obsessions and degenerations of the self are reflected in capital sins and the moral dogmatism with which religions severely regulate and control human life. Corrosive and destructive tools born from civilization itself. Thus mankind has abandoned its primary and original connection with own self. The only way to finding purity is our lives. This is the story of humanity.
2. What part of PauseFest made the biggest impact on you?
It was really interesting to participate in this incredible event, which takes place in Australia, so far away from Buenos Aires, Argentina, where we live. What we liked most about Pause Fest was the open mind profile and the liberty that they gave us to create. To be able to make an experimental piece, which is exposed worldwide without having the eyes of the client in our neck, is something that happens very few times in this industry.
3. How familiar were you with The Foundry software before this and how was your experience?
We only knew it by ear, we didn't know that you had so many applications like MODO or MARI.
We did know the NUKE platform, but not the main company The Foundry. Now we know that you have a tool for everything! And each of them is incredibly powerful.
Another challenge of this project was to comp everything into NUKE. We had never used it before and at first, the interface was pretty intimidating, but after passing that barrier it was incredible to worked on it.
It has a totally different way to organize and see the layout and all the effects that you are applying. So different from the layers system that we are used to. Its worth the effort to experiment with this nodal concept to open new ways to comp and animate.
4. What advice would you give someone looking to enter into this area?
This is a large industry and its very difficult to manage all the steps in the process of production. That's why the best thing is to count on a solid team that you can trust, knowing that each member has a role and that they can work with each other as a unit, not as individual superstars.
I think the best advice is to look for the area that you feel more comfortable - not in a lazy way - but I mean the area in which you feel that it is interesting for you and that you may want to advance in the future, to experiment and to learn. I think in that way you can make a difference among others and it may not be a painful experience every time you sit in front of a computer! The main goal for me is to enjoy our everyday projects (or at least most of them).
5. Are you using The Foundry's software on any projects now and how's it going?
We will definitely stay with NUKE for comping. Its sometimes hard to leave aside all the tools that weve been using for years, but its great to make to leap of faith. Likewise, you never stop using the layer system for animating, it really depends on the kind of project that we are working on, and the amount of time that we have for the project. But from now on, if there is a comp to make, we will definitely stay with NUKE.
ABOUT SOUP
Soup is a kitchen.
It is a kitchen where mixing, improvisation, testing and modification take place. Where projects grow, where there is chemistry, where thinking, analysis and projects are important, but also where instinct is crucial. It is a kitchen for the curious, for the patient, for the passionate and for the detail focused. It is a space where we play, invent and enjoy. It is a place for experimentation and creation.
