Durban shooting update: Fourth person dies in hospital

As reported by the Nushera Raisa from ECR Newswatch, the death toll has risen to four, including the shooter, after one of the five injured residents succumbed to their wounds in hospital.

Police spokesperson Col Thembeka Mbele told Yasantha Naidoo from Times Live:

Another victim died in hospital last night. Police are now investigating three counts of murder, one inquest case and four attempted murders. The remaining wounded are still in the hospital.

A resident known only as Buhle told Chris Ndaliso from The Daily News that people were banging on doors on the first floor, and she could hear everything from the second floor.

Another resident said he heard the argument on the first floor and thought at first that the residents were drinking. He heard a loud bang but didn't think it was a gunshot. More gunshots followed, and he said it sounded like something forcing a door open.

Five residents were rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds from top to toe, according to Rescue Care spokesman Garrith Jamieson. A sixth person managed to escape unharmed.

- Nushera Raisa (@nushera) February 25, 2019 Police spokesman, Colonel Thulani Zwane confirmed yesterday that they responded to a report of multiple shootings in the flat where nine people were in a room. The apartment belonged to one of the deceased.

The IPID is investigating It was reported at the time that shooter was an off-duty Metro officer, Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad, who opened fire on nine residents in an apartment at the Teesav Flats on Monday, 25 February.

However, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating whether the metro officer was, in fact, responsible for the shooting which claimed four lives, including his own.

IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the firearm was retrieved from the ground floor after it was thrown out the first-floor window.
