NAB Perspectives: Vizrt s Bernt Kre Johanneen, Dr. Stephan Wrmlin Stadler Keep Eye on 4K, Live Virtual Graphics

Vizrt Chief Development Officer Bernt K re Johannessen and EVP, Sports, Dr. Stephan W rmlin Stadler sat down with SVG at NAB 2014 to discuss industry trends and new developments that the company has on display.

What are some of the trends you are seeing from your customers?

Stadler: Efficiency is key, and our recent acquisition of Mosart is all about efficiency as it automates the entire control room and one operator can handle operations that used to require three operators.

Johannessen: Mosart helps fulfill needs in both worlds. [At a 24-hour network,] not all the times are critical, so they can run with a reduced staff. But, in primetime, they need to have a quicker turnaround time, and, also, no one has the luxury of adding a lot of people to run a VOD system. So Mosart helps them do that without going crazy on the operational side.

Stadler: And it's a flexible and open system that can control graphics from other vendors or any big switcher. That openness is key, and we don't want to change that.

Johannessen: People love the ability to pick best-of-breed products, and, right now, things are so fragmented that there are small companies that just do one thing and they are great and fantastic at it. So we need to cater to the customer's needs to be open to those [technologies].

Stadler: As far as our biggest message in graphics, lowering the speed to air is the big thing, and we do that with Viz Arena for live sports. Viz Libero is great, but it takes a minute or two to turn around the graphics. With Arena, we can put certain graphics in live, like telestration on a replay or tying a graphic to the field.

And the client won't need another operator as it is completely integrated with the EVS workflow. The operator can use the LSM controller for the regular replay and then use a touchscreen to click on the image and put graphical elements onto the field.

What about 4K?Johannessen: The big buzzword is 4K, and it takes a little more juice in the box to do 4K graphics. But we have a huge advantage because we have been driving graphics that have higher-than-HD resolution for 8K screens.

Here at NAB, we are demonstrating the Fox Sports robot in real time in 4K placed over a 4K image from the Red One camera using a Snell 4K switcher. It's safe to say we're ready and capable of supporting all flavors of 4K equipment.

Also, our virtual-studio technology is back on the map, and it's an incredible opportunity for cost-efficiency. We have a very strong and capable system and a lot of improvements and enhancements to the core technology.
