Third season of 21 Icons features inspiring SA youth --

The socio-cultural multimedia project 21 Icons returns for a third season on SABC3 with a focus on the next generation of influential South Africans who are shaping the country s future. Created by photographer Adrian Steirn, 21 Icons features the lives of extraordinary South Africans who have had a positive influence on the country. Season 3 sees Gary Van Wyk take over from Steirn as principal photographer.

We ve got a young South African photographer shooting the best of young South Africa. There is something beautiful about that, says Steirn. This season of 21 Icons is the most relevant so far. Its all about South Africa in the now, and nothing represents that more than Gary. He is one of the most talented photographers Ive ever worked with, and handing over to him a person who I first got to know through work and then as one of my closest friends is one of the highlights of my career.

The first episode of the short-film series aired on 6 September at 19h27 and featured 31-year-old Athi-Patra Ruga, The National Arts Festival s 2015 Standard Bank Young Artist for Performance Art. Visual artist Ruga spoke with Van Wyk at his studio about his work, the importance of using his own body to communicate his stories, and his belief that unity can be achieved through disruptive art.

On 13 September at 19h27 the series will feature rape survivor and founder of The Jes Foord Foundation (JFF), Jes Foord. During a portrait sitting, Foord describes how she resolved to speak out rather than hide away in shame and how she chose to transform her appallingly negative experience into a positive one with the establishment of JFF.
