Warm Audio put the squeeze on with new Bus-Comp

Two-channel design offers optional discrete op-amp stage with Cinemag transformers Warm Audios Bus-Comp - a more affordable alternative to the classic hardware on which it is based.

Just after launching the DI boxes reviewed in SOS April 2020, Warm Audio announced a two-channel VCA-based bus compressor. As with much Warm Audio kit, the straightforwardly named Bus-Comp aims to deliver the performance of a highly regarded existing piece of equipment at a lower price. In this case, the inspiration is SSL's G-series stereo bus compressor, reviewed as a stand-alone Xlogic processor in SOS back in February 2006, and an indispensable tool for adding punch to stereo solo instrument recordings and stems, drum mixes and even complete mixdowns.

However, the USP here is that the Warm Audio Bus Comp, at £650$699, costs less than a quarter of the current retail price of the SSL! Nevertheless, this isn't a no-frills take on the concept - the Bus-Comp offers side chain access, a high-pass filter with cutoff frequency adjustable to 30, 60, 105, 125, or 185Hz, and the option of switching in a discrete op-amp input stage with Cinemag transformers. Best of all, it's already shipping.
