New ImageImage Features

We recently launched a suite of new features to support our image2image capabilities. Much like out Programmatic Editing features, these go well beyond simple file processing and provide our customers with the ability to automate repetitive image editing tasks at massive scale. Let's take a look at these features.

Gravity This provides control over where an image is placed on a background. The gravity parameters are simply the points on the compass, with north being the top of the image, south being the bottom of the image, and so on.

Shave This function allows you to do exactly what it sounds like; shave pixels off the edges of an image. Simply specify the width and height of the area you want to shave, and you are on your way.

There are also a group of commands that provide for control over the blurring of an overlaid image. They are as follows:

Unsharp_Radius This controls radius of the blur effect and controls how big an area the operator should look at when spreading pixels. This should be larger then the unsharp_sigma (defined next). Setting the unsharp_radius to 0 will automatically use the optimal unsharp_radius.

Unsharp_Sigma This parameter controls how much blur you want to apply to your image. Think of it like the size of your brush. It's a measurement in pixels.

One thing to keep in mind is that the sigma is a floating point value and can be stated in both decimals and whole numbers, however radius must be a whole number. The blur is stated as -blur {radius}x{sigma}. This handy chart shows the effect of radius and sigma on an image.

Unsharp_Gain The fraction of the difference between the original and the blurred image that is added back into the original image. This essentially is a control of the difference in blur from the original image. The default is 1.0.

Unsharp_Threshold Much like radius, this controls the limits of the unsharpening. The higher the threshold, the greater the blur. It has a default value of 0.5.

Gain and threshold are also FPVs so can be stated in decimals or whole numbers.
