As a format, unscripted covers a broad range of styles, everything from single documentaries such as Live From Space; fly-on-the-wall series like Ultimate Airport Dubai for Nat Geo; factual entertainment like TV2 s Sporty, Hairy Bikers; and reality series like BBC Three's Shoplife.

As well as the creative challenges involved in making any production, unscripted brings its own technical and organisational issues, which can often be avoided with appropriate planning. As a genre, unscripted typically involves huge shoot ratios, with over 900 hours shot for 6 x 1 hour episodes, the production of Shoplife for the BBC was no different.

Thanks to tapeless workflows producers can shoot as much footage as they want, without needing to worry about the physical and financial limitations of tape. But, of course, the collection of digital files this creates can be huge, requiring terabytes worth of storage. Moving all of that media poses its own difficulties. We'll talk through how, being able to move unedited footage direct from the camera for rapid review, organisation and management, productions are seeing phenomenal savings in time spent moving and managing their media. You'll get first hand accounts of how Aframe's proxy first workflow saved producers of National Geographic's Ultimate Airport Dubai 20 weeks in the edit, equating to about two weeks per episode.

The headache of logging all this footage and making some sense of it carries further time and resource challenges. The possibilities for more confusion with the back-and-forth of FTPs, couriers and emails that traditional review and approval workflows usually entail can convolute efficient asset management.
