Asset management and storage is one of those pieces of the video production chain that has sluggishly trailed behind some other more front facing and flashier investments. However, anyone working in the industry will tell you just how critical to the past, present, and future of an athletic department it is.
At last month's SVG College Sports Summit, the topic took centerstage and content leaders from around the country discussed the best ways to get started (metadata), how to make the tough decisions on what to store long term, and much more.
Making the first step into a robust asset management system can be awfully intimidating. Eric Pelloni, Assistant Director of BuffVision and University of Colorado outlines his department's process on building a new asset management and storage workflow for BuffVision. What were the obstacles and what system did he ultimately settle on?
The simplest place to start with asset management and storage workflow is establishing a strict metadata system. The challenge in there lies the need for consistency of metadata across one's own organizations, but also partner organizations. Scott Rinehart, Broadcast Technology Program Director at the University of Notre Dame's Fighting Irish Media expresses the important of establishing industry-wide file naming conventions.
While it may be understood that metadata is critical to the asset management and storage process, just how does an organization and its partners go about the practical process of putting those conventions into action. Scott McBurney, Associate Commissioner, Advanced Media at the Atlantic Coast Conference shares how his league has executed a metadata plan to be used across the league's 15 member institutions.
Metadata is exceptionally value to properly archiving and managing video assets, however, that data is useful and necessary not only for internal purposes. Rinehart shares the value that strong metadata can have for discoverability of your content online for fans and potential viewers.
On top of metadata, one of the biggest challenges in asset management and storage is making the big decision of what content gets kept and what gets deleted. Pelloni breaks down how he makes those difficult calls.
