The CSN co-founder details its network and affiliate' model, how creator windows are structured, why the 2026 FIFA World Cup should settle the cannibalization debate
As leagues and rightsholders look for ways to reach an 18-34 audience that has largely rejected linear television, a new category of live rights is taking shape alongside the traditional bundle. Creator Sports Network (CSN) positions itself as a network in the classic sense, with creators serving as the modern affiliate: instead of a transmission tower covering a DMA, the affiliate is a person with a community, and the game lives on that creator's own channel.
CSN co-founder Barrick Prince, who previously led original content at Twitch, says the company works with more than 1,000 creators across eight sports and eight languages for partners ranging from the Bundesliga to the Savannah Bananas. Here, he details how creator windows are negotiated around - instead of inside - exclusive deals and what the industry has and hasn't internalized from Caz TV's landmark FIFA World Cup deal.
For those concerned about cannibalization, how consistently are creator streams proving truly additive, not cannibalizing existing rightsholders?
Consistently, and the reason is that this is a fundamentally different experience. The biggest misconception about creator streams is that we take the broadcast feed and put it on YouTube. Think about how traditional distribution works: one network, one signal, pushed out through affiliate stations market by market, built for passive, linear viewing.
Creator Sports Network's Barrick Prince: The highlight generation isn't the threat; the threat is a business model that wasn't designed to capture the way they actually love sport. CSN runs on the same architecture with the affiliate reinvented. We're the network, and creators are our affiliates. But where a TV affiliate is a transmission tower covering a DMA, our affiliate is a person with a community. The game lives on the creator's channel, and the audience is there for the creator - for their voice, their reactions, their people. Fans are in the chat the whole game, riffing with each other and with the creator in real time, on the platforms where they already live. It's hard to cannibalize a viewing experience the incumbent product was never providing.
To be clear, we're not arguing that every game needs a full creator stream. This is a layer of the rights stack, and we match the format to the event. For most properties, there's a deep bench of under-distributed inventory - matches buried on the schedule or out of territory - and that's where full creator-led broadcasts belong. We program around the marquee events: preliminary matches, undercard fights, early races, and qualifying as full creator streams, then watch-alongs that support the main event and drive audiences into it. The creator layer builds the moment instead of competing with it.
The data on the windows we run backs it up. Across more than 1,000 creators, eight sports, and eight languages, roughly 90% of the audience watching our creator casts is 18-34 - the demo that has largely left linear - with average watch times north of 15 minutes.
This generation never left sport. They just changed how they watch it. For a single Savannah Bananas game, we've had more than 60 creators streaming at once, each hosting their own community on their own channel, and those games ran alongside the most ambitious traditional slate in Bananas history across ESPN, ABC, Disney+, The CW, and TNT Sports. Nobody in that chain saw us as competitive, because we were delivering an experience and an audience that none of those windows reach.
How do you structure a creator social rights window without conflicting with a league's existing media-rights agreements. And how complex is that negotiation?
Exclusivity is real, and, when a partner has granted exclusive rights, that's when we get creative. Many times, exclusive means exclusive in certain areas: a specific territory, platform, window, language, or media type. We're flexible about who we partner with because the goal is the same in every case: deliver new young fans and a new monetization window, through a creator window that runs alongside the primary exclusive feed rather than inside it.
The other thing that makes this workable is that we're not asking anyone for a full season. We take packages of games, and, because we program across many properties, we can combine a package from one league with packages from others and build our own slate. Our creators and their communities get a continuous calendar of live matches, while no single rightsholder has given up more than a handful of games. That's a much easier yes than a traditional-rights ask, and only an aggregator can offer it, since no single league could program that slate from its own content.
Within the window itself, we've developed three rights layers: creator rights, where vetted creators broadcast to their communities across YouTube, Twitch, TikTok, Instagram, X, and Facebook; athlete rights, where players themselves become the broadcast; and keyhole rights, raw single-POV feeds that run alongside the primary broadcast. And where a deal genuinely sweeps in all digital rights, we're honest about it. We don't operate on that property until those rights revert or get carved out, and the rightsholder always controls compliance.
Is it complex? Yes, and that complexity is exactly where our expertise lives. Underneath it is the operating layer we've spent years building: recruiting and vetting creators at scale, matching them to properties, rights compliance across platforms and territories, ad delivery and verified measurement, payments and revenue share across the whole network - all running as one system.
