CJP building virtual production studio for BNU

Adding LED wall to green screen studio expands creative options

CJP Broadcast Service Solutions, systems integration, production and content digitisation specialist, is working with Buckinghamshire New University (BNU) to develop state-of-the-art virtual production facilities. Central to the project is the installation of a 6m x 3m high resolution LED wall.

CJP is converting an existing video production studio, which previously had a fixed green screen. The project includes installation of the LED wall together with high-power computer workstations and virtual production graphics software to drive it. A high resolution digital cinematography camera, with full tracking capabilities, gives students complete creative freedom in how they use the studio. The project also includes a refresh of the lighting grid, using modern low-energy luminaires.

Our goal is to put something in front of students that is relevant to their employability, said Dr Russel Stone, head of the School of Creative and Digital Industries at BNU. We work very closely with the media industry - alongside our High Wycombe campus our students also study at our teaching base at Pinewood Studios.

All this means that we know what skills are needed, and we strive to support them, Stone said. CJP showed us we could achieve what we needed in virtual production, using exactly the same hardware and software that our students will use when they move into the industry.

The School of Creative and Digital Industries runs foundation, graduate and postgraduate courses, and the new facilities will be primarily used by them. The school also has courses in animation and visual effects, and our School of Art, Design and Performance also covers studies in acting, hair and makeup, prosthetics, set design and more, Stone said. We want as many students as possible to benefit from this new studio, to really enhance their learning experience and their employability.

CJP is a market leader in the design and delivery of virtual production studios, and following a competitive tender process, came up with a compelling case for the university investment. Central to the success of the project is the continuing relationships created, not just for CJP to provide initial training for the academics and support staff who will use the studio, but also with all the key suppliers who can potentially form links with students and the faculty.
