Sunday movie: The Foreigner what you need to know

M-Net brings us a good dose of action this week with The Foreigner, starring Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, about a father who avenges the death of his daughter.

Veteran actor Jackie Chan doesn't disappoint and remains one of Hollywood's most hardworking actors. I mean, he released at least one movie if not more, consistently every year from 1970 until 2017.

While no new films of his were released during 2018, fans can look forward to six new movie releases during 2019, including Wish Dragon and Once Upon A Zodiac.

Plot Ngoc Minh Quan runs a Chinese restaurant in London with his business partner Lam. When his teenage daughter is killed in a clothing store bombing, he seeks revenge. The explosion is claimed by a group calling itself the Authentic IRA . Failing to get the names of the bombers from Scotland Yard, Quan next focuses on the Northern Ireland deputy First Minister Liam Hennessy, who speaks publicly about his status as a former IRA leader while condemning the bombing. A cat-and-mouse conflict ensues.

Review The action film has a Taken vibe to it, directed by Martin Campbell who is known for Golden Eye. Chan was cast in a role so different to what he usually portrays, and it took viewers by surprise.

Yes, there are some martial arts in this film, but Chan received critical acclaim for his portrayal of a heartbroken and wearied father with nothing left to lose. Brosnan also doesn't disappoint as the shady minister.

The film takes on a different perspective in our day and age when immigrants are so often assumed as the terrorists, and not often seen in the roles of a family man coming to terms with his daughter's death.

A former Vietnam War special forces operator turned London restaurateur who is out to avenge his daughter's death when a terrorist group planted a bomb in a clothing store.

Liam Hennessy (Pierce Brosnan)

The current Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, who is a former member of the IRA and has links to the terrorist group responsible for the bombing. Quan believes he may even know the identities of the bombers and will stop at nothing to learn their names.

Other roles:

Michael McElhatton stars as Hennessy's right-hand man, Jim Kavanagh.

Katie Leung stars as Quan's daughter, Fan.

Charlie Murphy stars as Sara McKay, Hennessy's mistress.
