Telecom, mapping technologies to help children in India by building resilience in disaster prone areas
New Delhi, India - On the occasion of the Universal Childrens Day Nokia today announced to join hands with Save the Children for an important social cause - protecting children in India during disasters. Both parties will build the resilience of children and their communities in India through Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and social protection by providing better communications connectivity with its telecom technologies and navigation with mapping technologies. The program will be implemented starting with states including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.

Sandeep Girotra, vice president and head of India Region, Nokia Networks, said: We feel strongly that its our social responsibility to contribute and protect the children in India pre-, during and post- disasters as they are the nations future. We are committed toward this, and our advanced telecom and mapping technologies, coupled with the Save the Childrens global expertise in DRR and social protection, can build a greater resilience to protect children. We believe this model that aids social protection and resilience can be taken well beyond India.
Thomas Chandy, CEO of Save the Children, said: We are grateful to Nokia for its generous help to make a huge difference to children of India through innovations in DRR and social protection, especially since the company is an expert in communications and mapping technologies. The companys telecom technologies can spearhead communications connectivity in real time to reduce the risk from disasters, thereby ensuring that children and their communities are safe. We believe this would be a highly innovative partnership with path-breaking use of telecom technologies.
Did you know? According to Save the Children, due to disasters such as Jammu and Kashmir flood this year, and the Uttarakhand flashflood in 2013, children have severely suffered, as their education, nutrition, safety as well as overall care and protection have been adversely affected. In recent decades, disasters have become multi-fold and weather patterns unprecedented. Due to the threat of environmental risks, the poor are exposed to a range of everyday shocks and stress that lead to reduced coping capacity of households and, eventually, further impoverishment. This situation heightens childrens vulnerabilities.
