The Micro Video Explosion

With the exploding popularity of micro video platforms like Vine and Instagram video, we thought we'd take a closer look at the trend, the platforms, and how Encoding.com can be used to leverage micro-videos. First out of the gate, Vine was founded in June 2012, and was acquired by Twitter in October of 2012. They've led the charge in the micro video arena with their 6 second snippets. Following on the heels of Vine, Snapchat, the wildly popular impermanent content sharing platform, released a 10 second video feature in December 2012. Next in line was Facebook's Instagram, rolling out a 15 second video feature in June 2013. Not be left out, the founders of YouTube launched MixBit in July of 2013. MixBit differentiates itself by allowing users to combine video content from other users to spawn their own unique creations. A few of the less popular apps include Poke, Vigi, TwitVid, TwitLens, Viddy, SocialCam, Lightt, Cinebeat, Cinemagram, Kinoptic, and Flixel. Wow. That's a lot of micro video apps. Having used Vine, Instagram, and Snapchat extensively, I have no clear preference, but I do like the shorter 6 seconds of Vine to the 15 seconds of instagram. 15 seconds is an eternity in my short attention span world.
