Carolina Parenting Honors Capitol Broadcasting for Family-Friendly Benefits and Culture
Capitol Broadcasting appears on Carolina Parentings N.C. Family Friendly 50 list for the eighth time in 2013.
Carolina Parenting recently honored its 2013 N.C. Family-Friendly 50 Companies, and Capitol Broadcasting once again appeared on the list. Each year the publishing company which produces the Triangle's Carolina Parent magazine recognizes 50 companies in our state for helping employees achieve work-life balance with innovative programs and benefits.
CBC made the list for the eighth time with the 2013 selection.
Honoring Winners, Recognizing Balance
Triangle recipients received recognition at the Women@Work Breakfast on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at the Embassy Suites in Cary. The event featured Duke Women's Health Advocacy Initiative Director Kathy Kastan as keynote speaker, highlighting the need for increased attention to women's heart health.
CBC received the Carolina Parenting honor at the annual Women@Work Breakfast on October 22.
I owe my life to people who paid attention, said Kastan, who underwent heart surgery at the age of 42. All of us need to be proactive health advocates.
Kastan went on to explain that heart disease is the number one killer of American women. And she addressed how busy careers, motherhood and more keep women stretched to their limits.
It's easy to forget what's most important: the health of our mind and the health of our body, she said. All of us have limits and need to be forgiving of ourselves for having limits.
She constantly had the crowd of women repeat her mantra, I will make time for myself today.
CBC and the other companies on the Family-Friendly 50 list were selected by Carolina Parent in partnership with UNC Kenan-Flager Business School based on information provided by the companies about available benefits, programs, and company culture.
Carolina Parent announced the 2013 N.C. Family-Friendly 50 list in September, featuring the winners in their Carolina Parent, Charlotte Parent and Piedmont Parent magazines.

The Family-Friendly Culture at CBC
CBC offers a wide variety of family-friendly benefits, everything from health insurance and child care scholarships to discounts on gym memberships and holiday parties. Employees appreciate these benefits, but also love the understanding atmosphere in our company.
I underestimated how hard it is to be a working mom, especially since the FOX 50 station moved to Raleigh, doubling my one-way drive to an hour, said FOX 50 Creative Services Producer Karin Fullington. But CBC helps make it work. After I returned from maternity leave, my supervisor Kevin allowed me to adjust my schedule to a 1 hr earlier than normal. I arrive early and leave early so that I can avoid rush hour, get back to Creedmoor, and pick up my baby from daycare before they close. It has helped tremendously. I don't enjoy waking up at 5:30am, but otherwise, my chaotic life would not work at all.
CBC offers a wide variety of family-friendly events like CBC Night at the Canes, an annual Easter Egg Hunt in the WRAL Gardens and a holiday party with Santa Claus.
I love that CBC puts family first, continued Fullington. Other companies are not as supportive. I spend two hours in the car, five days a week, because I'm thankful for what CBC does.
WRAL.com Out & About Editor Kathy Hanrahan agrees.
Before I even had my son, I felt like CBC was a great place for parents to work, said Hanrahan. Now, I know first-hand how supportive the environment is for working parents. It all started with paid maternity leave time. That was such a wonderful thing! My manager was very supportive and encouraged me to stay out as long as I needed to and not to rush back too soon.
Although the schedule of WRAL-TV Assistant News Director Aysu Basaran cannot be as flexible due to the nature of her job, she still experiences the family-friendly benefits at CBC.
Carolina Hurricanes games, Easter egg hunts and Christmas parties are among the fun activities we've enjoyed as a family thanks to the generosity of CBC, said Basaran. I can't even tell you how excited our children get about these events! It really makes me feel like the company cares about not just me as an employee, but my family as well.
"I've been a parent while working at two different divisions of CBC. Both divisions were very supportive when I've needed to take time off for my kids. That tells me it's truly part of the company's culture."
