A SOUND EDUCATION

Veale Associates has created music and post production facilities dedicated to those training for a career in sound. The project, at the Universitys St Marys Road, Ealing site, combines a recording studio complete with control room, live room and drum booth, with a post-production studio.

The development is part of a multi-million pound campus regeneration scheme for the University, aimed at improving students learning and social experience. VA worked closely with principal contractor Willmott Dixon to create the studio facilities, having been involved in the design and build of sound and recording studios for both Falmouth and Middlesex Universities.

The project proved to be a significant success due to its timeline. Most projects of this kind have a minimum lead time of 4 months for design and install and VA only had 6 weeks due to the nature of the program, said Eddie Veale, Veale Associates head consultant. "All acoustic projects are different, and this one presented the particular challenge of designing a set of studios to a very tight program, absorbing the unknown literally as it presented, and within that constraint, provide flagship facilities which will give the students the same working environment that they will experience in real world studios later in their careers. I am proud that not only did we achieve high end teaching studios but a snag free handover too, and the University is very pleased with the results."
