KCETLink Commemorates Womens History Month

with Inspiring Documentaries

Burbank, CA - Feb. 25, 2015 - KCETLink, a leading national independent public broadcast and digital network, commemorates Womens History Month with several fascinating documentaries throughout March. These programs celebrate the courage, commitment and strength of influential women and their significant impact on the U.S. as well as the world.

UNSUNG HEROES: THE STORY OF AMERICAS FEMALE PATRIOTS

Wednesday, Mar. 4 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on Link TV

Today more women serve in the armed forces than at any other time in our nations history. Women pilot B-2 stealth bombers on combat missions, drive tanks in Iraq, direct Marines in Afghanistan, command carrier battle groups, fly jet fighters and helicopters, and continue the noble tradition of providing critical battlefield care as doctors and nurses.

This courageous heritage can be traced back to the Revolutionary War where women like Molly Pitcher and Sarah Shattuck donned mens clothes and took up arms against the British. And, though they did not have the right to vote, hundreds of women participated in the Civil War as nurses, spies and soldiers. Of the 33,000 women who served their country during the Great War, nearly 300 lost their lives. More than 700,000 women defended the country in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Today, there are almost two million living female veterans whose contributions spans three generations. The service of these women has been heroic and their sacrifices profound, but their enormous accomplishments largely ignored.

MEET MARY PLEASANT

This one-hour, award-winning documentary, narrated by renowned actress Ruby Dee, reveals the daring story and impact of 19th-century African-American activist-pioneer Mary Ellen Pleasant, now known as the Mother of Civil Rights in California. Using new research, a live one-woman performance based on Pleasants own words, reenactments, montage, period music and photos, and scholarly commentary, the film uniquely brings Pleasants story and achievements to life while reveals, for the first time how Pleasants great court battle changed modern-day civil rights law.

INDIA: A DANGEROUS PLACE TO BE A WOMAN

In December 2012, a young medical student was brutally gang raped on board a bus in Delhi. Horrified by news of the attack, 28-year-old British Asian Radha Bedi travels to India to uncover the reality of life for young women.

CALIFORNIA WOMEN WIN THE VOTE

Wednesday, Mar. 25 at 9 p.m. PT on KCET

Using both historical materials and live reenactments, this film presents the dramatic Suffrage campaign that won the women of California the right to vote nine years before the Federal Amendment. The campaign became a role model and motivation for the rest of the country; today, the tactics and spirit of these women are a guide and an inspiration for citizen activism in a democratic society.

In addition to the films, KCETLink will feature a series of articles, stories and videos online, which will celebrate accomplished, inspirational women that have been featured in award-winning programs and blogs such as, ARTBOUND, DEPARTURES, KCET FOOD and SOCAL CONNECTED.
