Annecy - Celebrating Women in Animation Who's who of the animation world will descend on the stunning French town of Annecy next week. Mickael Marin, Annecy's head of Economic Development & Market Film, took some time out from the preparations to give an inside look at this year's conference.

How did you come up with the theme of this years conference? Why is this so important?

We have two main themes in Annecy this year: Tribute to Women in Animation and Spain.

For the first one, our Artistic Director, Marcel Jean wants to give a spotlight to women who have helped to change attitudes and promote female expression in the world of animation. We're thrilled to give the Honorary Cristal to the well-known animator Florence Miailhe.

For Spain, the idea is to celebrate a country with a strong background in animation and a very dynamic and creative production.

Why do you think Annecy holds its prestigious place in the animation community?

The Festival first took place in Annecy in 1960. Since then, year after year, it has become a reference for animation artists and for the animation industry. This perfect combination, between art and industry, provides a 360 view of the business and a clear picture of the state of the art in every edition. Moreover, in Annecy, you can find a right balance between mainstream productions and independent art.

As MIFA celebrates its 30th anniversary, what do you consider some of the most exciting moments in the organizations history?

Every single edition is exciting because even when it's the same market, you build something different with new projects, new companies. This edition is special as it's the 30th anniversary. Since the creation of the market in 1985, we will welcome the biggest number of attendees with more than 2,500 professionals.

What excites you about the future of animation?

Animation always pushes the limits. Thanks to artists and thanks to technology, the frontiers for imaginations are limitless. It's exciting because you know that it will be better and better. The animation industry is strong because since the beginning with Georges M li s, he sought solutions to fit artist wishes and dreams. Future of Animation is the main theme for this MIFA edition and that's why we will hold three special keynotes.

Also, LAIKA, the animation studio behind the critically-acclaimed films The Boxtrolls, Coraline, and ParaNorman, as well as the upcoming Kubo and the Two Strings, will present at Annecy. Jeff Stringer and Jon Dobson will participate in a collaborative tools and flexible methods presentation. As part of that, they will show how they use FLIX to find better and faster ways to draw and share storyboard panels.
