2016 Zhejiang College Entrance Examination is about to get started. Statistics from Provincial College Enrollment Video Conference which convened from the afternoon of Apr.14 show that, more than 300,000 candidates in Zhejiang Province apply to take the exam in 2016, down a little from 2015. It is estimated that the enrollment rate will be no less than 87.1 per cent (the percentage in 2015).
Fewer Applicants in Unified College Entrance Examination
According to the statistics, there are overall 307,400 applicants across the province in 2016, down by about 3.3 per cent from 2015. The decrease of applicants can be accounted by birth circle in recent years, which features a decrease of high school graduates.
A structural change is revealed in the number of applicants for College Entrance Examination: less applicants in Unified College Entrance Examination, a slight increase in independent entrance exam takers of Higher Vocational and Technical School and a surge of students applied in the trinity system and earlier admission exams of Higher Vocational and Technical School.
The applicants for Ordinary University reach 268,600, among them 99,500 students of liberal arts and 169,100 students of science. Compared to 2015, there is a total decrease of 11,300 applicants with a decrease of 3300 and 8000 respectively in liberal arts and science. Applicants for independent entrance exams of Higher Vocational and Technical School amount to 388,000, up 900 from 2015. Before, application and comprehensive assessment have already launched in trinity system and earlier admission exams of Higher Vocational and Technical School. With the expanding scale and social impact of pilot projects, the year 2016 witnesses exponential increase of applicants in these new forms of enrollment mechanism.
Enrollment Numbers in Trinity System to Increase by 35 per cent
The trinity system is the first to break the myth that an exam determines the future. Further steps are taken to strengthen the reform in Zhejiang Province with more universities of 985 Project included in pilot projects. The great expansion in the number of applicants and enrollment is sure to be seen.
All the 46 participated local universities declare their plan to enroll 6557 high school graduates in the trinity system, increasing by 35 per cent from 2015, including the debut of Zhejiang Police College in fully implementing the system. The enrollment in the trinity system is anticipating a promising prospect in universities of 985 Project , featuring an increase in planned and actually participated pilot schools.
Across- the-board earlier admission of Higher Vocational and Technical School is realized in 2016. There are 35 schools participating in the project, up 20 from 2015 while tripling planned enrollment in the previous year with the figure of 142,000. On the principle of multiple selections, reciprocal choices and earlier admission, the students are required to confirm arranged schools online timely by operating on service platform at set time.
Special Plan For Rural Students increases enrollment to 600
In order to give rural students a high-quality higher education, Special Plan (both at university level and local level) in rural areas is set up in recent years at the demand of the Ministry of Education. Zhejiang Province will further develop preferential policies, make sure they are rightly implemented and strengthen scrutiny on candidates' eligibility.
The Plan at the university level is carried out in those universities under the direct administration of the Education Ministry as well as other pilot schools which conduct independent recruitment, serving as a way to greatly enlarge the number of students to receive education in higher institutions; At the local level, colleges and universities in Zhejiang Province are the undertakers of the Plan. Related policies undergo some changes in 2016. First, the scale and coverage of students are to be enlarged. In principle, the enrollment in a university should be no less than 3 per cent of its recruited undergraduates in the first round, estimated to be 600, up 200 from 2015. The coverage of students will expand from the original 12 counties to 29 counties just as in the university level. Second, we will further define that eligible students in the Plan at the university level must possess rural household registrations through review mechanism performed concertedly by the Education Ministry and the police force.
