KCETLink Explores Local and Distant Deserts in ird Installment of Destination and Culture Series, Global LA

Global LA: Deserts takes viewers on a tour of deserts - both locally and abroad - from the Coachella Valley in Southern California to the Negev in Israel

Burbank, Calif. - March 26, 2013 - KCETLink, the new national independent public media organization created by KCETs recent merger with the Bay Area-based independent media company, Link Media, announces the third installment of its exciting destination and culture series, Global LA with Global LA: Deserts, premiering on KCET on April 2, 2013 at 9 p.m.

We are excited to showcase the splendor of deserts and desert communities in both our region and abroad, said Bohdan Zachary, Vice President, Broadcast, Syndication & Program Production for KCETLink. Global LA is a unique series - particularly because it provides Southern California viewers with fascinating information about destinations in their own region, while featuring distant locales that are equally as appealing.

Hosted by Zay Harding, Global LA: Deserts features the worlds most famous dry spots, including Southern Californias Coachella Valley.In the episode, Palm Springs modernist architecture is examined, which has become a signature of the region. Viewers learn about the areas glamorous days as a playground for the rich and famous of Los Angeles and receive a glimpse inside of the home once owned by Frank Sinatra. The show also explores Indian and Tahquitz Canyons, ancient homelands of the Cahuilla Indians who still manage tracts of land and learn about the wind turbines, an alternative energy source, that has transformed Southern Californias desert landscape along the I-10.

Internationally, the show explores mountain biking and hiking in Israels Negev desert, as well as the regions solar power programs. In the Northern Territories of Australia, viewers take a multi-day trek along the historic Larapinta Trail. In China, viewers explore Jiayuguan City in the region of Gansu situated in the Gobi desert where factory plants built decades ago have produced an oasis-like industrial center for the country.

The show also reveals the Wild West of USA with a visit to Monument Valley in Utah, uncovering both its sacred past as part of the Navajo Nation, as well as its popularity as a Hollywood film set; also an authentic stage coach trail in Texas is featured.

Examining the regions ties to a number of destinations and cultures around the world, KCETLink and Globe Trekker announced a partnership last year to co-produce Global LA in four original quarterly specials, sponsored by Subaru. Global LA: Deserts will premiere on KCET on April 2, 2013 at 9 p.m.
