Learn to use REW for room analysis
Acoustic treatment is one of the most important factors in any studio, and with the extensive range of products available - not to mention conflicting information - working out the best way to tackle your room's issues can be quite a daunting task. Simple steps such as fine-tuning your monitoring and listening positions, or adding some panels to reduce reflections from nearby surfaces can make a big difference to an untreated space, but to really get the best out of a space, you'll need to measure its response and plan your purchases/builds accordingly.
One of the most widely used tools for the job is REW, or Room EQ Wizard, a powerful software package that's capable of carrying out a detailed analysis of an acoustic space and providing all the information you need to plan your approach to treatment. As is often the case, though, the software's extensive capabilities mean it presents users with a rather steep learning curve, and you'll also need a decent understanding of how to interpret the results!
Thankfully, the experts at GIK Acoustics have put together a tutorial video (embedded below) that talks through the process of using REW to measure the likes of frequency response, SPL, decay times and more, along with details on how to configure the software and generate waterfall graphs.
