au Introduces the \miraie\, its First Smartphone for Juniors

KDDI and Okinawa Cellular announce the release of aus first junior smartphone, the miraie, featuring a wide range of functions to ensure children can enjoy safe, secure smartphone use, and a durable design. The miraie is scheduled for release in the latter half of January 2015.

A reasonable basic monthly rate of 3,620 (excluding tax) (or 2,686 with au Smart Value [1]), including Flat-rate Data charges, is available to purchasers of the miraie when the user is a child of elementary school age or younger. A dedicated rate plan, the Junior Smartphone Plan, which includes a Junior Upgrade Program at no additional cost is offered in conjunction with the release of the miraie.

The miraie features a dedicated button on the side of the phone that when pushed sounds a security buzzer, while capturing the users location information and using the camera and sub-camera to photograph the users current surroundings. Information on the childs location and a photo of the surrounding area are then automatically sent to the childs guardian. The miraie is also waterproof and dustproof, and is compatible with U.S. Department of Defense standard MIL-STD-810G for shock-resistant performance.

The miraie also has a number of features designed to offer children safe, secure smartphone use, including a dedicated browser with filtering levels that can be configured according to the childs age, and more detailed limitations on length of use, use of applications and address book registration. It is also equipped with the Secure Character Input feature, which provides a warning when a child enters an inappropriate word in email or the phones browser, offering even greater peace of mind.

Along with the release of the miraie, a version of the au Smart Pass customized specifically for the miraie will be made available to provide children with an even greater sense of security. This will include a number of apps elementary school children can enjoy for fun or to help with their studies, carefully chosen from among the apps provided with the au Smart Pass unlimited use apps. With a search function that prevents the display of search results that may be inappropriate for children, parents can feel even more comfortable in allowing children to access the Internet with the miraie smartphone.

The official au +1 collection of accessories will offer covers made of a soft material that completely covers the phone from edge to edge, high-performance protective film, and items from the au online shop or available only at directly-owned stores.

The miraie will be on display beginning January 20, 2015 at au SHINJUKU (Shinjuku, Tokyo), au NAGOYA (Sakae, Nagoya), au OSAKA (Umeda, Osaka) and au FUKUOKA (Tenjin, Fukuoka).
