GoPro for a Cause and Crop Trust Launch Documentary on Svalbard Seed Vault

Today, GoPro for a Cause is excited to launch a short documentary to support Crop Trust's work with The Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

More than 93% of fruit + vegetable varieties in the U.S. have gone extinct since 1903, and gene banks desperately need help safeguarding crop diversity so agriculture can adapt and continue feeding the world. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault, located in the mountainside of a remote Arctic Archipelago, is a fail-safe seed storage facility built to withstand time, climate and the challenge of natural or man-made disasters.

While Svalbard Seed Vault represents the largest collection of crop diversity in the world - it currently houses more than 880,000 different seed varieties - Crop Trust needs to grow that number to at least 1.5 million in order to preserve the world's biodiversity. That goal is attainable, especially when you consider that it only costs $625 to conserve a single crop variety.

To help raise awareness, funds and share Crop Trust's story with a wider audience, GoPro for a Cause is excited to showcase a short documentary that is close to our hearts. Daniel Scherer, GoPro's lead producer on the project, has spent nearly 18 months shooting, editing and producing the documentary we're premiering today.

GoPro HERO cameras allowed Daniel to capture unique, first-person perspectives on the renowned Seed Vault, creating an immersive experience that puts viewers in the shoes of a Vault visitor. Created in conjunction with animators from Uncle Ginger, TITLE OF DOC reveals what it's like to enter the vault and explores Crop Trust's mission through a candid conversation with renowned agriculturist, Cary Fowler.

In tandem with our documentary launch, GoPro for a Cause is proud to kick off a fundraising initiative, matching donations up to $50,000 and entering donors into a giveaway for the chance to win big GoPro prizes.
