SCTE FOUNDATION CREATES NEW SCHOLARSHIP FOR WOMEN IN MEMORY OF CATHY OAKES, CHAMPION OF WOMEN AND DIVERSITY
NOV. 21, 2013 (Exton, PA) The SCTE Foundation today announced the creation of a new scholarship in the memory of SCTE executive Cathy Oakes for women in the cable telecommunications industry technical workforce.
The Catherine Oakes Memorial Leadership Scholarship for Women will recognize and reward women who currently are or aspire to become cable engineering or operations professionals. The scholarship may be used toward registration in an industry development program or an executive education program, including the SCTE-Tuck Executive Leadership Program and the SCTE-Georgia Tech Management Development Program.
The scholarship will be funded entirely by donations earmarked specifically for that purpose and was announced today at the CableFAX Most Powerful Women in Cable breakfast. An online donation form is available on the SCTE Foundation website at http://foundation.scte.org/give. An online application form will be made available in January. Applications will be reviewed by past recipients of the Women in Technology award presented annually by SCTE, Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) and CableFAX.
Cathy Oakes passed away suddenly last Saturday. As senior vice president, operations for SCTE, she had been a leading voice for diversity and inclusion in the cable engineering and operations workforce. She championed the integration of women's and diversity issues into the SCTE-Tuck Executive Leadership Program and the SCTE Foundation, and she was instrumental in the creation of Women's TechConnect, a mentoring program for women technologists that is a joint initiative of SCTE and WICT. She was honored at today's CableFAX breakfast event as one of cable's Top Women in Technology.
"One of Cathy's passions was her work in women's and diversity programs," said Yvette Kanouff, executive vice president, corporate engineering and technology for Cablevision Systems Corporation. "Her support and desire to help others helped make the TechConnect mentoring program a reality and a success. Women at all levels of the industry are in her debt for her efforts."
Funeral arrangements for Oakes will take place on Friday, Nov. 22, beginning with a viewing from 8:30 10:15 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin promptly at 10:30 AM. Both the viewing and the Mass will take place at St. Elizabeth's Church in Chester Springs, PA.
Established in 2005, the SCTE Foundation is intended to increase the technical, business and leadership skills of the telecommunications engineering workforce, attract and recruit women and minorities into engineering careers, and position the telecommunications industry as a desirable career opportunity for aspiring young people in the early stages of their careers.
