Television News Duty Editor

Directing a team of writers, sub-editors and multimedia producers during your shift, Keeping up with the news, planning for your shift and ensuring that each team member understand the plan, Ensuring editorial standards are maintained with respect to story selection and quality and style of video, text, image and multimedia stories

Working closely with all online functions (including multimedia, social media, special projects, graphics/design) as required to ensure seamless delivery of web and multimedia elements

Liaising regularly with the news editor, deputy editor, social media editor and multimedia editor and ensuring you are up to speed on the editorial plans and diaries

Assigning stories to writers, copy tasting from the wires and, where necessary, writing local and international stories

Sub-editing of copy, photo selection, headlines and visual content on important stories

Taking decisions on story selection, consulting with the editor, deputy editor and/or multimedia editor when necessary

Deputising for the editor and deputy editors when called upon to do so

Ensuring stories are properly tagged and effectively linked to other relevant content

Writing and compiling the daily newsletter

Completing comprehensive handovers to the shift team that follows yours

Liaising with external contributors to ensure timeous delivery of columns, blog posts etc

Requirements:

Computer and web literate

At least 5 years' journalistic experience

At least 2 years' experience in a supervisory role

Demonstrable interest in and passion for hard news

Good editorial judgement and interpretational skills

Understanding of online news and new media with some experience of working in an online news environment

Perfect English

Strong writing skills

Strong visual sense

A passion for story telling

Strong understanding of journalistic ethics

Good grasp of legal issues around broadcast and online media

Strong work ethic, and drive to deliver flawless outcomes

Ability to work under deadline pressure

Good understanding of social media

Advantageous

Familiarity with one or more web content management systems

Tertiary qualification in journalism

Note: The successful candidate will be required to work irregular and long hours, including weekends, public holidays and standby shifts.
