Reflecting on the vast range of live news being streamed via our technology last week, there was one recurring theme: remembrance.

After weeks of searching for the lost Malaysian plane by the international community, the relatives of the passengers on board were finally notified by text that flight MH370 was destroyed beyond all reasonable doubt further confirmed by a live press conference afterwards by the Malaysian officials who were subsequently taken to task by the press for all to see via Associated Press' live broadcast as to their handling of the situation-particularly of the notification of the plane's demise to the now grieving relatives whose images were splashed across front pages the world over clutching their mobile phones.
The United Nations this week also marked the commemoration of the two-hundredth anniversary of the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade with a live streamed event on the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
Appetite and fascination on this subject has recently been reignited by Oscar winning film 12 years a slave' which was cited heavily. Director Steve McQueen was voracious in telling the world that the themes within the film are still very much relevant today whilst accepting his Academy Award and took part in the observance.
The unfortunate relevance of past events was further raised at the meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York on conflict prevention, most notably on the Crimea. Delivered via live streaming, the European Union representative opened his speech with references to the horrors of World War 2 and consequent birth of the UN charter honing in on the importance of the collective responsibilities of the international community to safeguard this and to refrain from the threat or use of force.
President Obama must have been hoping that the sabre-rattling wouldn't escalate during his sobering visit to the cemeteries at Flanders whilst in Europe for the Nuclear Summit. Both of these events were broadcast live on the AP platform as was his joint press conference with the Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, where the pair took on questions from reporters over the severity of the situation in the Crimea with Obama stating that although America has no vested interest in Crimea, to ignore the situation would be to show casual indifference and ignore what has taken place in Europe's history.
Whilst politicians and heads of state were re-engaging with the past to re-address the situations of the present, one story that has dropped off the news agenda was the situation in Sudan and South Sudan. Humanitarian leaders gave a live briefing at the UN reporting back on the now forgotten situation in Darfur where 6.1 million people are in need of assistance -an increase of 40% from last year with 500, 000 children affected by lack of food and where only 3% of funding has been achieved to try and resolve this humanitarian disaster.
The world's newest country South Sudan is also imploding', the brutality against the elderly and children is a story not coming out'. It is a travesty and tragedy that the people of South Sudan do not deserve' and a far cry from the hopes of peace, security and education which ranked as top of their list of hopes with the birth of the new nation.
