New Dallas Mavericks Team Facility Monitors Practice with JVC PTZ Cameras

JVC Professional Video, a division of JVCKENWOOD USA Corporation, today announced the new Dallas Mavericks practice facility has been equipped with four JVC KY-PZ100 PTZ network video production cameras to monitor practice and workout activities. The cameras, along with two JVC RM-LP100 remote camera controllers, are part of a larger video system the NBA team uses to evaluate players and draft prospects.

In October, shortly after the start of the current season, the Mavericks moved into their new headquarters. Located across the street from the America Airlines Center, where the Mavericks host home games, the practice facility features two full courts side by side, with each court equipped with two additional baskets. The new building also features weight training facilities, meeting rooms, and coach offices.

Each court has one camera positioned at a baseline corner and a second at half court. The corner camera can provide coverage of the entire court, but a camera operator usually follows the action more closely, using an RM-LP100 to adjust the camera's 30x optical zoom lens. According to Mike Shedd, Dallas Mavericks head video coordinator and player development coach, the four JVC cameras provide all the coverage needed for the practice space.

DVSport Software, a Pittsburgh-based company specializing in digital video solutions for the sports and medical markets, designed and integrated the video system for the new facility. Justin Rudd, DVSport vice president of sales and marketing, said the JVC PTZ cameras were an ideal choice for the team's needs because of the integrated streaming capabilities, wide angle lenses, excellent picture quality, and on-board recording to micro SDHC/SDXC cards.

With eight baskets between two full courts, the indoor practice area was a challenge to cover with four cameras. The walls are so close to the court, Rudd explained, so when you're shooting, you have to be cognizant of the angle because of the distance. The JVC cameras worked out nicely in that regard for us.

The video footage is used with DVSport's FastBreak coaching software, which allows personnel in the arena and practice facility to access and filter video into cutups to study particular players or groups of plays. The Mavericks also use DVSport Rewind, which provides tablet access to near real-time footage during a game or practice.

Each camera is connected via fiber to a Blackmagic Design Smart Videohub router, which allows any camera to be adjusted with either controller. The router's web-based user interface also provides easy remote access to the JVC PTZ camera controls and on-board recording capabilities.

All practices, even unofficial player workouts, are required to be recorded. In the past, if a player wanted additional time on a practice court, a member of the video team would have to come in and record it. Now, with JVC's built-in IP capabilities, a video team member can simply access the system's web-based interface to turn on the cameras and record the session. Administrators can also watch practices at any time via a secure web connection.

The JVC cameras save a lot of people a lot of time and a lot of travel, said Shedd. The ability to access recording remotely is a big, big deal - it's a game changer.
