Digital Storytelling: My Semester at Sea

In the Fall of 2014, Sarah P. embarked on the opportunity of a lifetime. She boarded a ship with approximately 700 other college students to travel the world while learning things you can't learn from a textbook.

Sarah was taking part in Semester at Sea, a global study abroad program sponsored by the University of Virginia. She and the other students, traveled to Russia, Poland, Germany, Belgium, France, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Brazil, Barbados and Cuba before debarking in the States.

We asked Sarah what she thought about the program, the overall experience, and the video recap she made.

What did you study during your SAS experience?

I was able to take classes that complimented both my journalism major and international studies minor. I was in a global media classes, a literature class, a travel writing class and a film as history class.

What advice would you give to students interested in studying abroad?

I would say that it is a scary decision to commit to, but it is worth it and that you will get out of it what you put into it. See what you see, not just what you want to see. Take every opportunity to learn about others, as well as yourself.

Why did you make a video of your SAS semester?

I made the video for the College of International Studies and OU Education Abroad for a scholarship opportunity, but also to share my study abroad experience. It was a wonderful time for reflection about how a semester abroad was truly life-changing and I am so glad that I now have a powerful way to communicate what my experience was like to friends, family, peers and employers.
