National Geographic Launches 06 Nature Photographer of the Year Contest

WASHINGTON (Aug. 15, 2016)-National Geographic invites photographers from around the world to enter the 2016 Nature Photographer of the Year contest. The grand-prize winner will receive a 10-day trip for two to the Gal pagos with National Geographic Expeditions and two 15-minute image portfolio reviews with National Geographic photo editors.

Eligible contestants can visit natgeo.com/photocontest to submit photographs in one or all of four categories: Landscape, Environmental Issues, Action and Animal Portraits. Each entry to the contest will be submitted through National Geographic's photo community, Your Shot, where members can comment on photos and share their favorites. The entry fee is $15 (USD) per photo, and there is no limit to the number of submissions per entrant. Entries must be in digital format and submitted electronically. The contest ends Saturday, Nov. 4, at 12 p.m. EDT (U.S.).

The 2016 Nature Photographer of the Year contest is an opportunity for photographers to show us the power of nature and their love of it through their imagery, said Sarah Leen, director of photography for National Geographic magazine and National Geographic Partners. Every year, our judges are delighted by the incredible passion and skill evident in the entries, and I expect this year to be no exception.

Sarah Polger, senior producer for National Geographic Travel and manager of National Geographic photo contests, remarked, The four categories of this year's contest will give photographers a chance to capture the complexity and beauty found in the world around us. We anticipate compelling and revealing images.

One first-place winner will be chosen from each of the four categories, and the winning photographs will be published on nationalgeographic.com. The overall grand-prize winner will be chosen from the four category winners and will be announced in December 2016.
