WASHINGTON (Oct. 15, 2014)-In the newest installment of an ongoing collaboration, National Geographic and Rovio Entertainment offer a front-row seat to the most intense animal rivalries with NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ANGRY BIRDS ANIMAL SHOWDOWN: 50 Wild and Crazy Animal Face-Offs (National Geographic Books; Nov. 4, 2014; ISBN: 978-1-4262-1516-2; $13.95 paperback / ISBN: 978-1-4262-1518-6; $13.95 ebook) by Mel White. Alongside the beloved Angry Birds characters, readers will discover 50 of the greatest showdowns in the animal kingdom in this fun book full of facts and Angry Birds humor. Each entry is illustrated with National Geographic images of the feisty animals.
National Geographic and Rovio share a passion for lifelong learning, which has brought these two brands together to help readers better understand our world. When Rovio celebrates its fifth birthday (aka BirdDay ) on Dec. 11, 2014, it will release a National Geographic-themed level in the original Angry Birds game.
From the tiny fire ant, measuring just a fraction of an inch, to the 6-foot, 485-pound mountain gorilla, the ferocious animals featured in NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ANGRY BIRDS ANIMAL SHOWDOWN use their natural defenses and crazy tricks to battle against their menacing opponents.
The animals profiled in the book fall into four level-of-mood categories: Annoyed, Testy, Outraged and Furious. Each faceoff is wilder than the last, starting with the opossum, who outsmarts hungry snakes, coyotes and other opponents by playing dead, and building up to the saltwater crocodile, known to attack sharks, water buffalo and leopards. Readers will visit the depths of the sea where the poisonous puffer fish guzzles water and inflates to three times its size to defend itself against the wide jaws of the 6-foot-long cobia fish. They will travel to India, where mongooses use agility and lightning-quick reflexes to dodge strikes from the deadly king cobra; and will meet Australia's clever dingoes, which hunt in small packs to tire out and corner prey like hard-kicking wallabies.
In addition to exploring these rivalries, the book provides a Rap Sheet for each fierce animal profiled, summarizing its home range, behaviors, strengths in battle and other fascinating facts.
As a bonus, each level showcases the Angry Birds and the real reasons they are always at war with the Bad Piggies.
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ANGRY BIRDS ANIMAL SHOWDOWN is the sixth book in the ongoing collaboration between National Geographic - one of the world's largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations - and Rovio Entertainment - an industry-changing entertainment media company with a broader mission to make learning fun.
