According to a report by Digital TV Research, OTT will reach nearly half the TV households in the world by 2020. In 2020 the number of homes across 51 countries watching online TV and video over fixed broadband networks is expected to reach 706.53 million, up from 196.90 million in 2010 and 374.43 million in 2014.
In the Global Online TV and Video Household Forecast, figures indicate that between 2013 and 2020 Asia Pacific will attain 231 million more OTT TV homes, which equates to 61% of the global additions over the same period. China alone will add 140 million, taking its 2020 total to 206 million which is more than the whole of Europe. In 2014 China is already set to overtake the US as having the most OTT TV households.
By 2020 South Korea will have the highest proportion by country with 79.8%, while India will only reach 21.9%.
Video on demand (VOD) subscribers were at 21 million in 2010 and are expected to reach 83 million by the end of 2014. Digital TV Research predicts that these numbers will reach 199 million by 2020.
The US will contribute 62 million of the 2020 total; while Japan will follow in second place with 20 million. Figures reveal that the sector will grow significantly in territories outside of the US as North America s share of the total will fall from 80% in 2010 to 57% in 2014 and onto 34% in 2020.
Other countries with top VOD subscription numbers in 2020 include China with 14,438, the UK with 10,698 and Germany with 10,253.
