As we reach the end of 2014 we can reflect on a better year for our industry in terms of financial performance, with sales and profit growth both stronger than in the previous post-recession years. Hopefully this augurs well for a positive 2015.
There is no doubt, however, that there are significant challenges ahead. This year has seen our customers coming to terms with changing business models. As content is now distributed across multiple platforms, the systems required to facilitate delivery have changed.
The use of traditional IT technology is now widespread and bespoke broadcast hardware is starting to be replaced by software and virtual hardware in a number of places along the broadcast chain.
There are, of course, a handful of leading-edge broadcasters that are on top of this transition but there are many more that are wrestling with the turmoil that such a paradigm shift brings. It is quite a cultural change to move from a standards-centric, hardware-focused environment to a viewer-centric, software-defined environment and the vast majority of end users are a long way from making a successful transition.
This is mirrored by the vendors, our members, who are facing similar challenges not least with their product development strategy. Understanding the needs of the customer is definitely a pre-requisite but not always so easy when they are in such a state of flux. The clear thinkers, the innovators, the agile and those that can understand the needs of the end user and quickly find the solution will be the ones that win through in the longer term. The need for greater vendor collaboration is also evident to bring about the best solution for our customers.

Jason Power is Principal Consultant at Widcombe Consulting, a specialised business advisory practice focussing on the media technology sector. His work focuses on strategic planning, M&A, go-to-market,and sales enablement, bridging across professional and consumer technology markets.
Prior to establishing Widcombe Consulting, Jason was with Dolby Laboratories, where his roles included leading the $200M+ broadcast technology licensing business. Over a 12 year tenure at Dolby, Jason partnered with the broadcast industry to successfully introduce several new audio and video technologies including surround sound and high dynamic range displays. His efforts to establish practical broadcast workflows for surround sound were recognised with a Technical Emmy Award in 2006.
Jason has a keen interest in audio production, and spent the early part of his career with AMS Neve, a leading vendor of audio post production equipment. He holds an Executive MBA from London Business School and a first class BSc in Applied Physics with Electronics from Aston University.
