GoPro Presents Tony Royster Jr. Drummer's Odyssey
Tony Royster Jr. has played drums since the age of three. He grew up collaborating with his father and embraced his natural talent as a gift to play music, often referred to as a prodigy by his fans. No stranger to music lovers across the globe, Royster has established himself as a force to be reckoned with and a talent in high-demand. His most notable platforms include worldwide recognition as Jay Zs drummer for the past eight years and explosive drumming for both the Magna Carta and On The Run Tour with Jay Z and Beyonc . GoPro and Tony worked together to film this live visual experience at the DW Drum Factory in Oxnard, CA. Tony rides his massive drum set through an introspective journey through his past and future.
GoPro takes an intimate look into Tony's life, connecting the virtuous quality of his music to art through the lens of a GoPro. Experimenting with live sonic triggered visualization and projection mapping director Jordan Miller conceptualized the unique environment. Live projection specialists, Gabriel Noguez and Mattia Casalegno, projected old home movies and memories of Tony's childhood onto the main screen behind him, while GoPro time-lapse imagery was placed onto his drum set. As he played live, mics sensed tones in the room and Noguez and Casalegno took sound waves from drum frequencies to effect and alter the projections, in turn synchronizing imagery with Tony's intricate rhythms.
Miller and Noguez set up the shoot in three days, and in classic GoPro fashion, pulled in wide-angle shots using 30 HERO3+ Black Edition cameras with improved low-light functionality, utilizing Protune to capture all the action. They mounted Tony's drum set with Jaws Flex Clamps and found other unique ways to mount the GoPros, such as using the Handlebar/Seatpost mount affixed to his drumsticks. GoPro ran 25 cameras during Tony's first drum solo, going on to play live for three hours. The beauty in the room was incredible to witness. DW's crew and Tony's camp watched with jaws dropped. This was more than just a film shoot, it was an immersive visual live performance. Tony was willing to explore out of the box angles and work with custom mounts, to create this magical eight-minute-long performance and interview unlike anything GoPro has done before.

Artists can also use the GoPro App on a mobile device to control the camera if its mounted out of reach, while GoPros free editing software, GoPro Studio, makes it easy to edit professional looking videos for self-promotion across social media channels.
