Berklee has announced the appointment of Dr. David Bogen as the new provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, beginning July 1. As the chief academic officer for Berklee, Bogen will partner closely with the president to forge key partnerships and advance academic programs that bolster the core values of the institution across its local and global communities.
I am very pleased to welcome David Bogen as Berklee's new provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, said Berklee President Erica Muhl. David brings deep experience in and commitment to institutional transformation and addressing the rapidly changing needs of our students and faculty. I look forward to working with him to build upon Berklee's significant strengths in curricular and programmatic innovation toward enhancing the unique value of a Berklee education, specifically through the continued promotion of artistic excellence, globalization of programs, and integration of Berklees signature professional experiences into every learning environment. As we continue to work together as a community, our goal is to enable Berklee graduates to thrive now and in the future, and Davids unique capabilities as a leader, educator, and scholar will be key to our efforts.
Throughout his career, Bogen has pursued a vision of higher education institutions as catalysts for economic and cultural development within the cities and the regions that they serve. Prior to Berklee, he served as vice president for academic affairs and provost at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore, where he worked closely with MICA's president to position the college as an active community partner in the city, and to build reciprocal and authentic partnerships aimed at long-term impact and sustainability. With college and faculty leaders, he developed two successful proposals for major awards-one from ArtPlace ($510,000) and the second from the Maryland Department of Commerce ($300,000)-to support partnerships in community-based enterprise development and creative placemaking at the college's Center for Creative Citizenship.
Before joining MICA, Bogen was vice president academic and provost at Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, Canada. He was the academic lead on the $134 million new campus project at Great Northern Way, an emerging culture and innovation district in the heart of Vancouver. He also collaborated with faculty, staff, students, and senior leadership on major initiatives to increase diversity at the institution by building active artistic and commercial partnerships with First Nations communities, increasing the number of students who identified as First Nations or Aboriginal, and growing the number of BIPOC faculty with a focus on First Nations and Aboriginal artists.
The arts have tremendous power to engage, to uplift, and to heal individuals and communities, said Bogen. This power to draw people together and create experiences that address our many differences while speaking to our common humanity has never been more evident or more urgently needed. I am honored to be joining Berklee at this critical moment in its history, and I look forward to working with everyone in the Berklee community, and with our many partners in Boston and around the world, to advance this important work.
Bogen holds a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in sociology from Boston University, and a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is the author of Order Without Rules: Critical Theory and the Logic of Conversation and the coauthor of The Spectacle of History: Speech, Text, and Memory at the Iran-Contra Hearings.
He will serve as provost designate until Dr. Larry Simpson's departure on September 1.
