Arqiva and Dali Wireless Collaborate to Cover Glasgow City Centre with Updated Cellular Network

28/11/2017

UK, London, and Menlo Park, Calif, 28 November 2017: Arqiva, the leading UK communications infrastructure company, and Dali Wireless, Inc., leader in fronthaul innovation for virtual radio access network (RAN) have completed a project together to improve mobile coverage and capacity in Glasgow city centre with Dali's next generation digital Distributed Antenna System (DAS).

Arqiva worked with equipment manufacturer Dali Wireless and system integrator Cellular Asset Management on the upgrade by replacing the analogue components with Dali's digital DAS to provide superior performance and to support 2G, 3G, 4G and future 5G services. The installation in Glasgow is Dali Wireless's first in the UK.

Glasgow is a vibrant, bustling city with a population of over 500,000. It also has a large student population of over 50,000[1] during term time, which all creates huge demand on the city centre's communications network. In comparison to traditional DAS, Dali's digital DAS is able to provide the required performance to accommodate the ever increasing high capacity demands.

Dali's digital DAS is also completely scalable, meaning it can be used in all kinds of outdoor environments, as well indoor locations such as shopping centres and multi-floor offices. The flexibility of Dali's solution allows mobile operators to effortlessly update and expand their network in a plug-and-play approach.

The 2G, 3G, and 4G services of multiple mobile operators are delivered to 12 outdoor nodes from a central equipment room using CWDM technology over five optical fibre rings. The equipment is positioned in key locations in the city centre including a busy restaurant and a 300 year-old clock tower.

Jon Freeman, Product and Technology Director, Arqiva, said:

Working with Dali Wireless allowed us to provide a solution where the analogue components were replaced with a state-of-the-art digital DAS system, providing a multi operator solution and improved coverage and capacity for mobile phone users in Glasgow City Centre.

Mobile connectivity is a fundamental requirement of city living, and networks are beginning to feel the capacity squeeze as demand for voice and data continues to increase. Network densification in high footfall areas is the only way to alleviate these issues and as the experts in communications infrastructure we are delighted to complete the DAS upgrade in Glasgow for our MNO customers.

Basem Anshasi, Executive Vice President at Dali Wireless, said:

We are honoured to be selected by Arqiva as the Digital DAS provider for the city centre of Glasgow. In today's always connected world, wireless connectivity is no longer a nice to have, it's a necessity. With Dali's digital solution, mobile users in downtown Glasgow will be able to seamlessly talk, text, browse the internet and stream videos without interruption.
