Toshiba Publishes English Edition of Environmental Report 2018

15/02/2019

Tokyo Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today published the English edition of Toshiba Group Environmental Report 2018.

In recent years, as social issues such as climate change, increasing energy demand and resource depletion have increasingly made their impact felt, the international community has responded with measures that include the Paris Agreement*1 and the widespread adoption of the SDGs ratified by United Nations. Toshiba Group aims to contribute to solutions to these social issues through its business activities, guided by the ethos of the Basic Commitment of Toshiba Group: Committed to People, Committed to the Future. Particular efforts are being made in environmental management, where the focus is on responding to climate change as a contribution to achieving the SDGs.

The 2018 edition of the Environmental Report introduces Toshiba Group's policy for the SDGs and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the entire supply chain, exemplified by a number of case studies. It also reports the status of Toshiba Group's analysis of the risks and opportunities presented by climate change; an overview of Environmental Vision 2050*2, the group's long-term vision; a report on the progress of the Environmental Action Plan, our mid-term goals that need to be reached to achieve Environmental Vision 2050; specific initiatives in manufacturing and products and services; and basic activities that support business initiatives.

The report can be downloaded from Toshiba Group's Environment website at:

http://www.toshiba.co.jp/env/en/communication/report/index.htm

The report has the following sections:

1. Special Feature

This section introduces Group policy on helping to achieve the SDGs features, and case studies of our contributions to the SDGs in energy, smart mobility, buildings and facilities, retail and printing, disaster prevention, and production site management. It also introduces Toshiba Group's efforts to quantify greenhouse gas emissions throughout its supply chain, and case studies on greenhouse gas emissions reductions in upstream and downstream processes and the company's own business activities.

2. Vision and Strategies

This section explains an overview of Toshiba Group's Environmental Vision 2050 and reports on the goals and achievements to date under the Sixth Environmental Action Plan (FY2017-2020). This section also covers the process and results of Toshiba Group's analysis of the risks and opportunities of climate change, which is seen as especially important among the various social issues that face Toshiba Group and society today.

3. Business (Manufacturing)

This section examines manufacturing process efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, waste volumes, the amount of water received, and the amount of chemicals discharged at production sites, including case studies.

4. Business (Products and Services)

This section is concerned with efforts to deliver low-carbon energy technologies and energy-saving products and services, to increase amount of resources saved and amount of recycled resources used, and to reduce specified chemical substances contained in products. Once again, case studies look at the progress being made.

5. Management

The closing section looks at the basics, such as environmental risks and compliance measures, the environmental management structure, environmental education and human resources development, environmental communication, and conservation of biodiversity. The latter details how sites around the world are promoting initiatives to contribute to the Aichi Targets*3.

*1: The Paris Agreement is an international agreement adopted by the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21).

It is a framework for a participatory process where all COP members from 196 countries and regions cooperate with each other to deal with climate change issues.

*2: Toshiba Group's long-term Environmental Vision 2050 envisages the ideal situation for mankind in 2050.

It targets increasing Toshiba Groups overall eco-efficiency to 10 times the FY2000 level by FY2050 (Factor 10), and realizing affluent lifestyles lived in harmony with the earth.

*3: The Aichi Targets were adopted at the tenth Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10) held in Nagoya, Japan in October 2010,

and define 20 goals for the international community to achieve by 2020 such as raising awareness of biodiversity, sustainable consumption and production, and conserving endangered species.
