SV2 & NC-Q1s: More from Korg at NAMM

08/01/2020

Korg upgrade stage piano and debut noise-cancelling DJ headphones! They might not be quite what youd expect from Korg, but theyre smart and nicely thought-out: the new NC-Q1 noise-cancelling DJ headphones.

Korg always like to surprise us at least a couple of times a year by releasing products that you wouldnt necessarily associate with them, and the NC-Q1s - a pair of attractive and effective DJ headphones featuring active and passive noise-cancelling - definitely fall into that category. The source audio and active noise cancelling is neatly selected or turned on and off on a per-ear basis (so that DJs can still gauge the crowd response in one ear while monitoring their decks in the other) by simply tapping the outside of one of the earcups. The new headphones are available in black or white, are due by Spring and will cost around £300$350. We understand there will be more unexpected Korg products at NAMM next week, too - more details when we have them!

The Korg SV2 stage piano, shown here in its 73-note configuration, without the optional speakers.

The big - and rather more core Korg - news today is the massive upgrade to the companys SV1 stage vintage piano. Reviewed fairly positively back in SOS October 2009, the SV1 stage piano has been a popular keyboard for live performers over the past decade - but now Korg have transformed it. The logically named SV2, the 73-note version of which is shown above, has the same high-quality RH3 piano-action keyboard as the original SV1 and is also available in ivory or black, but offers over six times the sample memory and twice as many sounds as the SV1, a much-expanded effects section, and the option of high-quality built-in compact K-Array speakers if required (as shown on the 88-note version below).

The 88-note SV2, shown here with the K-Array built-in speakers.

SV2 pricing ranges from around £1700 to £1900$1900 to $2200, depending on whether you choose the 73 or 88-note versions, and whether or not you need the built-in speakers. As with the Wavestate yesterday, SOS Features Editor Sam Inglis got the lowdown on the SV2 from Luke Edwards at Korgs UK HQ just before Christmas - see the video below for more info.
