National Geographic Names Kei Jenkins General Manager, National Geographic Digital

WASHINGTON (Sept. 16, 2014)-Keith Jenkins has been named general manager, National Geographic Digital, it was announced today by Declan Moore, National Geographic Society's chief media officer, to whom Jenkins will report. Jenkins was previously National Geographic's director of digital photography and executive editor for digital content.

In his new role, Jenkins will help further develop and execute National Geographic's digital strategy. He will oversee design, production, multimedia and product as well as core digital content and commercial initiatives, including sponsorship and advertising.

Keith is a savvy leader with a clear vision of how to grow our digital business while creating a deeper sense of community and building momentum across digital platforms, said Moore. Under the guidance of National Geographic Chief Content Officer Chris Johns, Keith has made tremendous contributions, and I am excited to work with him as he takes on this new, vitally important role.

We have begun the process of creating a strong brand across platforms; this new position will allow us to accelerate that work and continue the transformation of National Geographic into a truly digital organization - one that honors its heritage in science, education and journalism while building a new global community for the future.

Jenkins joined the National Geographic Society as director of digital photography in 2013 from NPR, where he was the supervising senior producer for multimedia. As director of digital photography, Jenkins oversaw National Geographic's online photography presence and staff. He set the tone, editorial direction and overall strategy for National Geographic's global leadership in digital photography, overseeing all photographic work for the website, including the Society's online photographic community, Your Shot, and blogs. Earlier this year, Jenkins took on additional responsibilities as executive editor for digital content, in charge of content for all of National Geographic's digital properties.

Prior to joining NPR, Jenkins spent 13 years at The Washington Post, where he was a staff photographer, photography editor of Washingtonpost.com, photography editor of The Washington Post Magazine and deputy assistant managing editor of photography. Jenkins was AOL's first director of photography, and he also worked as a staff photographer at the Boston Globe.
